Taking an assessment

What candidates go through, from the invitation to their result.

What a candidate sees when they take one of your assessments, so you can answer their questions and read their results with confidence.

1. The invitation

  • Sent automatically when a candidate's CV passes on a job that has an assessment attached — they move to Awaiting Assessment. See Assessment Configuration.
  • The email — “Assessment Invitation - [job] at [company]” — shows the assessment, time limit, pass mark and due date, with a Take your assessment button. No email is sent if the job is closed.
  • There is no reminder email before the due date.

2. Before the timer starts

  1. Open the link

The candidate sees the assessment name, time limit and number of questions, and tips for taking it. Nothing is timed yet.
  2. Confirm their details

Full name and email, which must match the application.
  3. Verify it's them

A 6-digit code is emailed to them. It expires after 10 minutes; after 5 wrong tries the link locks for 15 minutes. Once verified, they stay verified for 4 hours.
  4. Read the instructions and start

The rules are shown — including that the assessment is monitored — and Start Assessment begins the timer.

3. Taking the assessment

Question types

  • Single choice and multiple choice — pick one, or tick all that apply.
  • Text answer — typed in a box. Pasting into the answer and copying the question are blocked.
  • Video answer — recorded with their camera and microphone, up to the length you set for the question (3 minutes by default). They can retake before moving on.

Timer and saving

  • One timer covers the whole assessment. It turns red with a warning in the last 5 minutes, and the assessment submits itself when it runs out.
  • Every answer saves as they go. They move with Previous and Save & Next, and can go back to earlier questions.
  • There is no pause. If they reload or come back later, their answers are still there, but the timer kept running.

Screen monitoring

Leaving the assessment screen — switching tabs, minimising or clicking into another window — is recorded:

  • The first two times, they see a warning and can carry on.
  • The third time is a final warning, and the attempt is flagged for you.
  • The fourth time ends the assessment, and what they have answered is submitted.

You see this as Screen integrity on their results — how many times and for how long they left, and whether they reloaded the page. Recording a video answer does not count as leaving.

4. After submitting

  • The candidate sees a thank-you screen and gets an “Assessment received” email. They are not shown their score.
  • Choice questions are marked straight away; the AI marks text answers and transcribes and marks video answers in the background.
  • A score above the pass mark moves the candidate to Shortlisted; otherwise they are rejected. Passing does not send an interview invitation — you do that.
  • Assessment links stay open for 7 days. After that the candidate is told the link has expired and to contact you.
  • A finished assessment cannot be taken again — the link says it is already completed.

The due date is a guide

The due date in the invitation is not enforced on its own — the link stays open for its 7 days. Follow up with candidates who haven't started.
